Story availability and expiry

Why a TikTok Story Link May Stop Working

Separate an expired Story from a copied-link problem before trying the same address again.

A TikTok Story link may stop working because the Story expired, the creator removed it, its visibility changed or the copied address no longer reaches the intended content. TikTok Stories are available for 24 hours, so a link that worked earlier may point to content that is no longer available. First check the Story in TikTok and confirm that the link is for the correct item. Repeating a download request cannot restore an expired Story or create access to content you cannot view.

Check time and availability before editing the link

Think about when you last saw the Story. If a day has passed, expiry is a practical explanation to check before assuming that the downloader or browser has broken. A shared message, saved bookmark or old notification can keep the address visible after the Story itself has disappeared. The continued presence of the link does not extend the life of the content.

Open TikTok using your ordinary account access and look for the creator's current Story. If the item is absent, there may be nothing left at that address to retrieve. The creator could also have removed it before the usual expiry period. Without a clear message from the platform or creator, avoid presenting one possible cause as a confirmed diagnosis.

A normal video post and a Story do not have the same expected lifetime. If someone sends you another link, check whether it is a new Story, a regular post containing similar material or the original address again. Similar covers and captions can make separate items look alike even when they lead to different content.

Confirm that the address identifies the intended item

A copied profile address can open the creator's page without identifying a particular Story or post. A truncated message can also omit part of a short link. Return to the original share action when it is still available and copy the address again, rather than guessing the missing characters or changing the path yourself.

The guide to copying the right TikTok post link explains the difference between a specific content link and a profile address. Apply that distinction before troubleshooting a download. If the address opens a different item, the immediate problem is the reference you supplied, even if the original Story has also expired.

When an accessible post is identified correctly, you can check an accessible post link with SnapTik and review the options that are actually returned. The website cannot promise that every Story will have a usable download option. Availability, the form of the link and the media supplied by the source all affect what can be offered for a particular item.

Separate a link error from a visibility limit

An invalid-link message appears when an address cannot be accepted as the expected input. That is different from a valid address that points to unavailable content. The invalid TikTok link checks help with missing characters, pasted text and the wrong kind of address. Those input checks do not change the visibility of the Story behind the link.

Access may also differ between a signed-in app session and a browser. Seeing a Story through your own account does not establish that the same content can be retrieved by another service. Do not share your password, verification codes or session information to try to bridge that difference. A media download is not a reason to hand over account credentials.

If the platform says the item is unavailable or its audience has changed, respect that boundary. Renaming a link, trying a series of unrelated download sites or repeatedly submitting the same request does not provide a reliable way to make restricted content accessible. Use a copy that the creator is willing and permitted to provide instead.

Choose the next step based on what still exists

If the Story is still visible and you copied the wrong address, correct the input and try once with the intended link. If TikTok itself is temporarily failing to load, check again after the connection or platform issue has cleared. Neither situation requires assuming that the content has been permanently lost, but neither justifies promising that a later download will succeed.

If the Story has expired, ask the creator whether they have an original copy they are willing to share. For your own Story, look in the device's camera library, export folder or editing project. These sources may contain the media you used before posting, independent of whether the Story remains accessible online.

Be precise about what you are seeking. An original clip may differ from the posted Story if the Story added text, stickers, music or another effect. A creator may have the original footage without having a separate file that exactly reproduces the finished Story. Check the available copy instead of assuming that one version contains every element of another.

Keep future originals before posting

For content you create, save the source assets and a finished export before relying on a temporary post as the only place they exist. The backup workflow for your own TikTok content keeps camera originals, projects and posted copies distinct. That distinction is useful when you later want to revise a Story or locate footage after it has expired.

Record the posting date and a short description alongside your own exported file. If several Stories use the same background clip, note which edit belongs to each one. This helps you find the right version without depending on an old link or trying to reconstruct the sequence from memory.

For someone else's Story, obtain the appropriate permission before saving or reusing a copy. The fact that a Story was viewable for a limited period is not a promise that it will remain available, nor does a download option settle reuse rights. Treat the link as a reference to current content, and keep any permitted local copy and its context separately if you need them later.
